This kitchen beautifully combines wood and metal with a textured wood grain, onyx door paired with a bright white high-glass door, and silver metal accents such as chrome appliances and aluminum-framed flip-up cabinets. Small accessories such as a kettle and fruit bowl in silver finishes tie the decor scheme together.
Wood has a warm, rich feeling that brings a cozy sense of home to any space. Metal, on the other hand, lends a sleek, modern touch, so bringing the two together is a great way to create a sense of balance in your home.
It can be difficult to know how to mix materials, colours, and textures in your home decor, but when done well it all comes together to create a beautiful, cohesive look. One of our favourite ways to do this is to blend metals with wood-look cabinets and furniture.
Here are a few basic tips to get you started. Once you have the hang of mixing wood and metals, you can run with it and follow whatever inspires you.
It is a good idea to choose either wood or metal as your main focus and then use the other material in accents. Maybe you want chrome countertops with a stainless steel dining table. Add wood-look cabinets and smaller decorative wooden accents like bowls and sculptures to the space.
Because you are pairing the different colours and textures of wood and metal, it is a good idea to keep the woods and metals you choose consistent with each other. Pick one colour and finish of metal and stick with it in a given room, and do the same with your wood. For example, If you choose dark, chestnut coloured cabinets with brushed rose gold handles, go for other rose gold metallic elements and chestnut furniture and decor. This creates a very cohesive style while blending eclectic materials.
This beathroom’s textured laminate wood grain door cabinets in Sierra Qualicum pair beautifully with the rose gold bathtub and metal faucets, mirror frames, and light fixtures in a similar colour. The light colour scheme with bold, dark accents creates a look that is both rustic and elegant.
Your furniture doesn’t all have to match. Mixing larger pieces is a more dramatic way to blend metal and wood if you are looking for a particularly striking look. Stick to the rule of having more of either metal or wood in your space, but feel free to bring in some large elements of both materials. We love the look of a rustic wooden farmhouse table surrounded by sleek metal chairs or stools, for example.
